:52 - Town of the Week, Weed, California. Midway between Portland and San Francisco, at the base of Mount Shasta, is the small town of Weed, California. Weed is located on the volcanic scenic byway, a 500 mile route running from California to Oregon, showcasing the extraordinary scenery linking the four notable volcanoes in that part of the continent. It was well-to-do lumber baron, Abner Weed, who established a sawmill and company town on Mount Shasta's western slope in 1901. Over the years, Weed acquired the nickname, "Sodom and Gomorrah." By the time the company was sold to International Paper in the 1950s, Weed had pruned its bad habits and cleaned up its reputation. The company then sold the town's homes to employees, who incorporated as a city about 40 years ago. The Weed Historic Lumber Town Museum's free tours features the town's abundant history of the early lumber industry and the town's roots. The only community college in Siskiyou County is located on College Avenue, just down the street from the Mount Shasta Brewery. Weed is the home of the high school Cougars, who like to hang out at the Hi-Lo Cafe. Hikers looking for something spectacular are partial to the Black Butte Trail, located between Weed and Mount Shasta. Not far from town is the Living Memorial Sculpture Gardens, a monument to all veterans of all conflicts; and another natural wonder, the Pluto Caves, formed from a lava flow 190 thousand years ago. That's a glimpse of our Town of the Week, Weed, California.
