Whad'Ya Know? For November 11, 2006
Hour 1 :00 - From Cincinnati to Los Angeles, it's a live broadcast with the man who walked right into the exit poll...
:01
- All The News That Isn't...
:05 - David Greenberg, author of Presidential Doodles is on the line, even though this is radio and we can't see the doodles. We don't have many doodles from George W. Bush, there are more embarassing things about Bush in the papers than his drawings. No Clinton drawings either, even though Michael knows he liked to doodle. Eisenhower is the king of doodlers, he was something of an accomplished artist. He set up his easel once a week and painted, he drew pictures of himself with hair and cold war imagery. They say that Clinton was drawing during the Somalia crisis. Is doodling a sign of boredom? Or a way to concentrate the mind and focus. There were children's rompers designed from Herbert Hoover's doodles. Michael finds Lyndon's Johnson's drawings similar to those of a disturbed 12 year-old boy, a three-headed woman, a cat with dogs coming out of its ears. :23 - Now here's a Gershwin tune, Strike up the Band, from John and Jeff. :30 - Chance Dehaven is back in the audience, and Michael thinks he's cruisin' for a bruisin'. Chance got a B on his last Econ 302 exam, but he'd be happy with a D in the class. He wants to know how to poison his roommate. Pamela Brown smells something, is it Limberger cheese? The smell is permeating the area, but no one near her has been eating any cheese. She might decide to take her chances and sit by Chance instead. M.C. Brennan wants to know if taking a spouse to a public radio taping is an adequate 40th birthday present, because that's what her husband got her. This is her second public radio taping in 24 hours. :37 - Steve Ackerman reads the four disclaimers and Joel and Donna try their hands at the quiz. Hour 2 :00 - Back for the second hour of Whad'Ya Know? with the man who says it's not enough to shovel... :01 - Thanks for the Memos: But first, some mail from listeners. Shawn wants to thank Michael for the prizes from playing the quiz in Fairbanks, AK. Lots of letters explaining what Nittany means, it might mean 'a single mountain,' but the writer's source is wikipedia, so who knows. Michael complained about staying in a hotel so close to the bell tower in Ann Arbor, but Connie wants to tell Michael that she loves the bell. A memo to purchasing personnel regarding Jack who is stuck in a ditch and will be in when AAA can get him out. Another memo to everyone in the office: the center secretary is in the middle of a busy hive, close to the conference room and everybody's desks. The secretary requests that anyone needing to go 'number 2' please use the garage bathroom, because while the intimate atmosphere of the office is great, there are some things this secretary doesn't want to know about. :08 - The Place to Be: Michael speaks with Christopher Bensch, director of the National Toy Hall of Fame. Christopher and his colleaugues spent a couple of hours experimenting with an Easy-Bake Oven so they would know what it can do. The newest model doesn't use a lightbulb to bake, so if Michael and his wife are looking for an upgrade... There are some toys that Michael would like to nominate: the Six Transistor Radio, the Jet Ex Engine, the Davy Crockett guitar with a crank, and John wants to nominate Sea Monkeys. Christopher grew up with a history professor father. He visited a lot of museums as a kid, and thought he could do better. :20 - Another tune from the Whad'Ya Know Duo, John and Jeff. :28 - In the audience Michael meets John, a retired chef of American cuisine with a twist. He wants to know how Michael is so smart. Kaitlin is chewing gum, it must be hereditary because her father is, too. She used to be on the cross country team, but now she plays the viola. She has an ironic question: why does Michael let people ask him questions? But she doesn't really care about if Michael gives her an answer. Georgia wants to know if Michael will appear at a Bar Mitzvah. Michael gave a speech at his daughter's Bat Mitzvah recently and he was the first person to ever get applause in his temple. Gretchen and Joseph's daughter is downstairs at the art and craft fair. She has a beautiful beer glass for Michael. Gretchen thinks the beer will taste better out of that glass. :38 - The Whad'Ya Know? quiz with Cassie who had a terrible time getting here, they experienced engine failure on her flight to Boston and couldn't get out of Chicago, then tried to visit family in Tomah, but winter weather made them turn around, and so they ended up here instead. Cassie wants to get some prizes to make her trip worthwhile. Steve calls in to play the quiz with her. :53 - We tip our hats to our Town of the Week: Rockport, Texas. Roy Lasseter says the weather in Rockport is beautiful today, 76 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. Roy is a native of Rockport, and he's a Pirate at heart, he played running back for the Rockport High School football team. But the Pirates aren't looking too swift this year. From the Gulf of Mexico to the bays, beaches, and estuaries of the south Texas coast, you'll find a wonderful world of birding. A record number of whooping cranes, perhaps 230 of them, are arriving to spend the winter. The Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is their sanctuary on Blackjack Peninsula, not far from the town of Rockport, Texas. Rockport lies a bit northeast of Corpus Christi, on the gulf coast in Aransas County. Among the city's attractions are the Texas Maritime Museum, the George Fulton Mansion, and the Rockport Center For The Arts. Last year, 33 thousand people toured the Fulton Mansion. This French Second Empire home, completed in 1877, featured modern plumbing, central heat, and a gas lighting system. Bird watching cruises, crabbing, and a Texas Treasure Casino Cruise are among your options to see and do. Eight miles north of town is the Copano Causeway, believed to be the longest fishing pier in the world. With 3600 residents, the local school district, home of the high school Pirates, is Rockport's largest employer. It's followed by Wal-Mart and the Wood Group Oilfield and Industrial Production Services. Tourism is still the biggest game in town, as billboards proclaim the area's new slogan, "Rockport-Fulton, fall in love with it”. Let's tip our hats to our Town of the Week, Rockport, Texas.
