:48 - Town of the Week – McGill, Nevada.

It’s been one hundred years since construction began on a mill and smelter at the site of this week’s western town, McGill, Nevada. McGill was a company town for Nevada Consolidated, and named after a local rancher, Bill McGill. At one time, there were 33 copper companies hereabouts, but Nevada Consolidated bought them all. Kennecott Copper moved in and took over smelting in 1933. In the early days, McGill was strictly segregated, and divided into various ethnic neighborhoods. There were six of them; Austrian Town, Greek Town, Jap Town, Lower Town, Middle Town, and Upper Town . Ethnic populations also included Serbs, Croats, Romanians, Armenians, Hungarians, Blacks and others. The McGill Drug Store and the Post Office were the only two establishments in town where everyone frequented and felt comfortable doing so. The century-old drug store is now part of the White Pine County Public Museum and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Directors intend to continue operating the drugstore as a free, public museum dedicated to preserving the small town drugstore, pharmacy, soda fountain era. North of McGill, on Highway 93, is Duck Creek Range, host to a variety of recreational uses. The three -room Crystal Cave is nearby, and fun to explore. With 1,066 residents, McGill Elementary School is nationally recognized. Middle school and high school students are bussed to White Pine Schools, 13 miles south in Ely. This is a town with a colorful past, much more friendly than it used to be, our Town of the Week, McGill, Nevada.
