Town of the Week
Chico, California
Thanks to John Bidwell's gold strike at Sutter's Mill in 1849, he was able to invest his money in Northern California real estate. He bought a huge tract of land near the Arroyo Chico or Little Creek of the Sacramento River, built a 26-room mansion and created a town called Chico. At her death Bidwell's widow left Chico nearly 2,500 acres which makes up the second largest municipal park in the country. It was here where the 1937 movie "Adventures of Robin Hood" with Errol Flynn was filmed; along with extensive parts of "Gone with the Wind."
The 80,000 residents of Chico regard the town as the most exciting little city in the state, with murals on most downtown street corners; light opera and theater in the parks; art galleries and museums, including the national Yo-Yo museum. The gold medal winning Sierra Nevada Brewing Company is located here. Visits to the Bidwell Mansion and the Stansbury House are must-sees on any visit here. Chico is the seat of Butte County, home to California State University-Chico. The mild Mediterranean climate is perfect for growing almonds, kiwi, rice, and walnuts. Outside the city are spectacular scenic vistas, including one of the highest waterfalls in the state, Feather Falls; and the only 3-level bridge in the country. It's the home of the high school Panthers and Vikings, and it's our Town of the Week, Chico, California.
