Town of the Week
Portsmouth, New Hampshire
From the captain's walks atop old saltbox homes, today's Town exists in an old-world atmosphere. Winding streets, huge trees, and fine old houses mark Portsmouth, New Hampshire. This town of 26,000 is the second oldest in the state, and its only deep-water port. It has been a major shipbuilding center since it was settled in 1623, with a bustling downtown harbor centered around a nearly 200-year-old naval shipyard servicing our strategic nuclear fleet. The submarine USS Dallas visits frequently. You'll remember it as the sub which hunted for Red October.
While Portsmouth is not a particularly large city, it does have three performing arts centers, 85 restaurants, and an old shoe factory filled with artists and crafts people. You'll tour the home of George Washington's personal secretary, Tobias Lear, and the home where John Paul Jones once lived. There are shops with antiques from Dickens' time in the Strawberry Banks museum area, and rare books in the Anthenaeum. Market Square is the home of the city's picturesque colonial downtown area. This is the Queen of the Piskatahquah River, and our Town of the Week, Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
