Town of the Week Carrollton, Missouri General James Shields is the most famous resident of this weekís Missouri
town. The General is known for being the only union general to defeat
Stonewall Jackson in battle, for serving as U.S. Senator from three separate
states and for dueling with Abraham Lincoln over a squabble which arose
while they, as well as Stephen Douglas, were courting Mary Todd in Springfield,
Il. His statue stands alongside the Carroll County Courthouse in Carrollton,
Missouri. This town of 4,700 is located in west Central Missouri, 70 miles
east of Kansas City, at the edge of the uplands . Overlooking the Missouri
River Valley. Civic life started here in 1833, and revolves around the
town square, which houses a 1904 courthouse. This structure and three
other buildings on the square are listed on the National Register of Historic
Places. The 30- year-old County Museum depicts early life with 43 period
rooms, including an early drug store and newspaper print shop. Special
events in Carrollton include a rodeo the last weekend each June; 4th of
July in City Park; and the County Fair the 3rd week of July. Youíll find
a neighborly atmosphere in a thriving farming community, striving for
