Thanks for the Memos

To: Distribution
Answering: Eating in the Building
From: K. Tappis
Date: May 16

For the past two years we have been struggling with the problem of people eating in areas where chemical contamination of their food could pose health hazards. During recent months, OSHA has targeted lab hygiene in R&D facility inspections and issued citations for food consumption in lab and quasi lab areas including attached or adjoining office space.

At the May 9 managers meeting, the issue was discussed in detail and the management team reached the conclusion that the only practical means of dealing with this issue was to prohibit eating everywhere except the cafeteria and conference rooms.

Effective immediately, we are requesting that lunch and snacks be eaten in the specified areas. We realize that this may inconvenience some individuals but believe that the health and safety concerns justify the action.

Addenda:

  1. When the new facility is completed, it will have specified areas for the ingestion of non-toxic substances.
  2. Since it is the intent of this policy to avoid the ingestion of toxic substances, the word "eating" shall be construed to include drinking. Hence, all consumption of coffee, tea, soft drinks, fruit juice, etc. is forbidden (except in the above-specified areas.)
  3. Consistent with this policy, the Maintenance Department has been instructed to remove all drinking water fountains at the earliest opportunity. Until such removal can be completed, all such fountains are off-limits.
  4. Since the fastest and most efficient way of introducing foreign substances into the body is by inhalation, all employees are hereby forbidden to breathe (except in the above-specified areas.) Strict adherence to this policy, with management setting an example for all of us, will result in a safer and happier workplace for everyone.
