2008: The Year of
Living Variously
2008 is, variously, the Year of Planet Earth, Intercultural Dialogue,
the Linux desktop, Australian Scouting, the Frog, the non-lethal Pain
Ray, Fire Pig, Rat, Reef, Potato, Mobile Web (Canada), Super Mini-SUV,
Feta (Greece), Push-Pull Polling, the Polar, Sanitation and Puggle Years,
23 new Jordan sneakers, Paniolo ranching (Hawaii),the Kucinich Revolution
(unlikely), the Mathematics of Molecular and Cellular Biology, the Fiat
500, the tail-end of the fiscal year'08 US budget (2.9 trillion), Iron
Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (Sweden),
Visit Indonesia, the West (US), the Golden Gate Endangered Species Big
Race, the Michigan State Year of Arts and Culture, the Euro (Cyprus, Malta),
the Slovenian Ascendancy (EU), the Bolivar Fuerte (Venezuela), Wrestlemania
XXIV, the Corporate Manslaughter and Homicide Act (UK), the Large Hadron
Collider (Switzerland), Bill Gates' retirement, the Beijing Olympics,
the last games at both Shea and Yankee stadiums, and the crowning of Burj
Dubai as the world's tallest structure (at least higher than the 2,121
foot Warsaw radio mast, now collapsed).
I do have a puggle, have been to East Lansing and the West and hope to
return, appreciate the difficulties frogs face and the need for sanitation,
don't see Linux breaking through, probably won't try to score one of the
hot new Jordans (although my daughter does work at Finish Line), have
run into the occasional molecular/cellular biologist and particle physicist
and wish them the best, whatever it is they do, am more intrigued by the
Polar than the Feta year, glad for Slovenia and wary of Indonesia, would
never buy a Fiat, was completely unaware of but am intrigued by Hawaiian
paniolo ranches, don't like the sound of the Super Mini-SUV or Pain Ray
(non-lethal though it may be), not sure what the Year of the Rat portends,
although someone said its better then it sounds, am not ready for the
Big Race across the Golden Gate but would be happy to whip off a check
to the WWF providing it isn't misdirected to Wrestlemania XXIV, can't
believe Gates will actually let go of the reins, sorry I never got to
either Yankee or Shea Stadium but not sorry enough to actually go, ditto
Beijing, think Robert Downey Jr. as "Iron Man" just might be
fun, suggest the UAE tower be renamed Babel Dubai, believe in Intercultural
Dialogue even though my smattering of Spanish would seem to make the new
Venezuelan currency the full-bodied Bolivar, give a big shout out to Australian
scouts, potatoes and the late Astrid Lindgren, am bemused by the Corporate
Murder Act in Britain, the Fire Pig and Kucinich Revolution and shall
not be Push-Pulled. A full plate in 2008.
